Nodding Head for the Post-Election Weary!!! (screw Lucy's Hat Shop)
I managed to sneak out this morning and get a couple of hours of last-minute get-out-the-vote canvassing on behalf of Philadelphians Against Santorum. Even got to sport the cool blue t-shirt Ray Murphy hooked me up with last night.
I love canvassing. I love getting out and talking to people.
Why?
Because peeps are crazy.
Take the guy on the 2400 block of Delancey I bumped into this morning. I announced myself as volunteering on behalf of "Philadelphians Against Santorum" and informed him we are trying to get people to come out and vote for Bob Casey. Before I could get another word in, spittle was flying.
His, not mine.
He started shouting about how his son is some assistant director of what not for the Rendell campaign and I should not be wasting my time talking to him because he would not be voting for my candidate.
Uh-huh. Right.
Do you think he even knows there is a Senate race going on? Does he think Bob Casey is running against Rendell for Governor? Or maybe does he think Rendell is running for Senate?
And as if I give half a rat's ass what your son does for Rendell. Good for him, I hope he gets a signed hoagie for his troubles.
Whatever the case, I left a few flyers at his stoop just in case this madman came to his senses later in the day.
Speaking of later in the day...
I've got to get something off my chest. Lucy's Hat Shop sucks. I'm sick and tired of dragging myself all the way across this city to hang out at some bar that doesn't have any decent beer on tap. And no, Magic Hat is not good beer. I'm not even sure it should be counted as beer. As far as I'm concerned that swill goes in whatever category that damn woodchuck stuff belongs to.
And their bottled beer selection is minblowingly craptacular. They claim to stock Victory's Hop Devil, but I've never seen one.
Here's their damn bottled beer list:
Amstel Light $5
Beck's $5
Beck's Light $5
Bud $4
Bud Light $4
Coors Light $4
Corona $5
Foster's Oil Cans $6
Guiness Draft Bottles $5.5
Heineken Bottles $5
Heineken Keg cans $5.5
Heineken Light $5
Hoegaarden $5
Jack Daniels Lynchburg Lemonade $4
Lager $4
Miller High Life $3
Miller High Life Light $3
Michelob Ultra $5
New Castle $5
Pabst Blue Ribbon Cans $2.5
Pilsner Urquell $5
Stella $5
Twisted Tea $4
Victory Hop Devil $5
To summarize, lots of mass produced crap for $3-6 and $5 for a Hop Devil.
Seriously, Philadelphia may be the best g-damn beer town on the planet. We've got two amazing breweries in Philadelphia - Yard's and Nodding Head - and a slew of amazing breweries located in the greater Delaware Valley. You think a bunch of progressive philly-types would at least have the common decency to patronize a bar that serves a couple of these fine beers.
Hopefully PFC and Philadelphia Against Santorum have worked out some sort of kickback/contribution system for every head they bring into that place. Otherwise, I don't know how their leadership can justify stickin' their members in some bar that has the nerve to serve Miller Lite on tap!
Here's to hoping that for the next election cycle, peeps settle on some other bar that does a better job of supporting local business. As far as I am concerned, Nodding Head is the no-brainer choice.
It's centrally located.
It serves great beer.
It serves great beer that is brewed in Philadelphia, on the premises.
And having their members meet at Nodding Head, PFC would be supporting local Philly businesses.
And they've got a ton of TVs on which to watch election results.
Hell, I've convinced myself - I'm going to Nodding Head tonight to watch the results. Hopefully they've got some of their dope soft-shell crab sammies on the menu. Screw Lucy's Hat Shop.

hey, great post on canvassing. agreed that lucy's hat shop is over priced and out of the way.
but nodding head?!?
sorry but that place is terrible.
especially when oscars is right there. those big lagers? the dank? what more do you want?
what more you ask?
I'd start with a BPA.
that said, you can't really argue with Oscar's all-world dive bar status.
Wow, that beer list is terrible.
And Nodding Head kicks ass.
Ruby Legs:
Thanks for coming out to canvass on Election Day for PAS. Contributions from progressives like you have made Philly for Change and major force in local politics and delivered record turnout for PAS.
I'm sorry to hear you dislike Lucy's. We like to host our events there for a number of reasons: The large open space, the sound system, the location (which may be inconvenient for you, but it's centrally located for most PFC members who live from Queen Village to Northern Liberties). Also, Lucy's is willing to open for private parties at no cost (they're normally closed on Tuesdays, but they open up on Election Day for us).
For the record, PFC/PAS has never received a kick back from Lucy's or any other venue where we have hosted an event. All of our donations come from individual contributions.
If you or any of your readers would like to help plan the next Philly for Change event, drop me an e-mail.

p.s. We love Yards too. That's where we get the beer for our annual picnic.
J.R. - thanks for the comment. PFC should really consider changing venues, or at least moving the spot around.
I know there are a ton of people out there who don't live in Queen Village to Northern Liberties who would like to come out to your events, but don't because it is such a hike.
In addition, by never reaching out to other parts of the city, you are pigeonholing your organization as only interested in "Queen Village to Northern Liberties." If that's all your are interested in, fine. But then maybe you should think about changing your name to QV-NL for Change instead of Philly for Change.
